The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS)
Authorized IACET Provider The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) is one of the oldest professional societies in the United States. Founded in 1909 as the American Home Economics Association, its purpose is to improve the quality and standards of individual and family life through programs that educate, influence public policy, disseminate information and publish research findings.

The Certified in Family and Consumer Sciences  (CFCS) program is developed, administered and monitored by the Council for Certification of AAFCS. Established in 1986 as an autonomous, self-governing body with respect to certification, the Council is composed of elected professionals certified in family and consumer sciences and an appointed public member.

Those certified in the field must have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree in family and consumer sciences or allied fields; or a minimum of a baccalaureate degree in another field with at least two years of work experience in a family and consumer sciences profession. In addition, a passing score on the National Family and Consumer Sciences examination must be achieved. To maintain certification, those who are certified must earn 75 professional development units (PDUs) every three years by participating in professional meetings and workshops, publishing, self-study, academic courses, and non-credit continuing education programs.

Certification program goals include: assuring the public that the professional certified in family and consumer sciences has attained a threshold level of knowledge to perform services as defined by the mission of the profession; fostering excellence in the family and consumer sciences profession and developing criteria for assessing such excellence; and promoting the professional growth of individuals certified in family and consumer sciences by encouraging a systematic program of professional development and continuing education. Other objectives are to enhance employment opportunities, assist employers in recruitment and selection, and provide recognition to individuals.
